Poster messaging was far-ranging and included appeals to work collectively to produce the supplies needed for overseas troops, calls for conservation championing carpooling to save on gas, warnings against wasting food and prompts to collect scrap metal to recycle into military materials.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>In 1942, rationing programs were implemented setting limits on everyday purchases.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>Re-opening\u00a0 to the public\u00a0 at 10 am on Tuesday,\u00a0 July 7th.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>While most posters were patriotic in nature, some tapped into fear or applied hateful renderings.\u00a0 There were powerful visuals depicting Americans living in the shadow of Axis domination and caricatures with racist imagery that warped human features.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>Today, these posters offer a glimpse into the nation\u2019s climate during WWII and how propaganda was used to link the home front to the front lines.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>The nearly 30 posters on view were selected from the Attleboro Arts Museum\u2019s permanent collection.\u00a0 These holdings were donated to the Museum by David and Toby London.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>David\u2019s parents, Max and Fannie, were the founders and operators of London\u2019s Department store and their impressive wartime poster collection was featured in the 2009 Museum retrospective \u201cHistoric American Posters: 1939 \u2013 1945, From the Private Collection of Toby and David London.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>Today\u2019s \u201cSign of the Times\u201d exhibition offers a handful of copies shown during the 2009 show, but primarily presents a fresh round of vintage graphics donated to the museum by the London Family.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23323\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mybackyardnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/G-MIM-4-sweet-daughter-with-masks2.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mybackyardnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/G-MIM-4-sweet-daughter-with-masks2.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.mybackyardnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/G-MIM-4-sweet-daughter-with-masks2-241x300.jpg 241w, http:\/\/www.mybackyardnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/G-MIM-4-sweet-daughter-with-masks2-120x150.jpg 120w\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"686\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1020 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/G-MIM-4-sweet-daughter-with-masks2-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>The in-gallery exhibit, along with a companion online show on\u00a0www.attleboroartsmuseum.org, will run from July 7th \u2013 22nd.\u00a0\u00a0 Executive Director and Chief Curator, Mim Brooks Fawcett, comments \u201cThe remarkably pristine condition of the posters in \u2018Sign of the Times\u2019 can be attributed to Fannie London\u2019s respect for the US government-issued works and her great foresight.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>Throughout the war years the posters would arrive at the department store by mail from Washington, D.C. and hang in the store\u2019s windows on Park Street.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>After displaying a poster, Mrs. London would carefully fold, store and catalogue it \u2013 and then hang the newly arrived piece.\u201d The posters in \u201cSign of the Times\u201d were part of that cycle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #00004e;\"><strong>Fawcett continues, \u201cIn a year consumed with public health crises and critical movements that have altered our concepts of health, safety and equity, I can\u2019t help but draw parallels between the messages in the exhibition\u2019s posters and certain contemporary struggles.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
