{"id":302,"date":"2019-11-18T15:55:20","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T15:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/?p=302"},"modified":"2019-11-27T17:37:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T17:37:50","slug":"don-doucette-on-district-17-school-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/?p=302","title":{"rendered":"DON DOUCETTE ON DISTRICT #17 SCHOOL HOUSE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">WATERSHED RAMBLES<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">BY DON DOUCETTE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-303 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/C-DMD-DON-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">SEVEN MILE RIVER HILL-ROBERTS CAMPUS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">As a seasoned Attleboro citizen, I was pleased to see the My Backyard feature about the four Hill-Roberts School Kindergartens yearly student population having the distinct opportunity to visit the campus District #17 one room school.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-304 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/C-DMD-DON-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">MS GORDON\u2019S CLASS WALKING TO LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">As a young boy, I had several occasions to ride up Lindsay Street in Attleboro from Pleasant Street to what today is Lindsay Farm Lane.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">We rode with my father up on an old wagon in the open air, originating from and then returning to Bauer\u2019s Dairy Barn on Locust Street where our dad\u2019s horses, usually older Belgians, were housed in a strongly timbered front stall.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">Our reason for \u201cclop-clopping\u201d to upper Lindsay Street was usually an all-day journey with purpose.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">Our dad horse-plowed gardens with those same Belgian work horses and what is Lindsay Farm Lane today was a client\u2019s large vegetable garden.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-306 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/C-DMD-DON-ES-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">MS EVELYN SILVA VISITING LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">The main reason for writing this memoir is to mention that one highlight of our early horse and wagon junkets was that we passed in situ the original site of what became the restored District #17 one room school house now existing in real living color on the grounds of the Hill-Roberts School in South Attleboro.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">I usually include mention of the Ten Mile River Watershed in my writing rambles. The original location for the District #17 was within the Bungay River drainage and its present site at Hill-Roberts School is within the Seven Mile River drainage \u2013 both main tributaries to the Ten Mile River.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">My Backyard also mentioned possible student STEM studies.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-307 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgemillmuseum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/C-DMD-DON-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">MS GORDON\u2019S CLASS A RECESS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">I might suggest teaching students to identify invasive plants. More than likely, today\u2019s students will be dealing in some way with this problem throughout their lives and as potential property owners will find this knowledge to be invaluable.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">Every school site has its share of invasive plants available in surrounding edge habitats.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">Those horse and wagon rides also featured traversing the old angled Lindsay Street train bridge. Sitting behind a working horse pulling a wheeled load up an incline is a most interesting experience. \u201cWhat if the horse\u2019s hoof should slip,\u201d often passed through my mind? But, thankfully, to no avail.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00004e; font-size: 14pt;\">We rode the wagon to the work site with all our tools and needs for the day\u2019s work.
