Fundraising event will support maritime heritage & education<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It may not feel like Fourth of July out there right now, but a local organization is going with a distinctly American flair for its fifth annual fundraising dinner.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Come join the Steamship Historical Society of America, an international nonprofit dedicated to preserving our country\u2019s maritime heritage, as it recreates this bygone era elegance at its Ocean Liner Gala on Saturday, May 2, 2020, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Squantum Association, 947 Veterans Memorial Parkway, East Providence.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The theme of the evening is the United States Lines, a company that started with just three ships in the 1920s and rose to prominence with some of the biggest names in transatlantic travel: the America, the Leviathan, and \u201cBig U\u201d herself, the SS United States. The United States launched in 1952 as the biggest ocean liner ever built in this country and the world\u2019s fastest ocean liner \u2013 two statements that stand to this day.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Featuring a multi-course meal recreated from some of the finest United States Lines cuisine ever served, the fundraiser will also include a reception and silent and live auctions. Proceeds from the event will support SSHSA as it continues to expand its offerings at the Ship History Center in Warwick. The group\u2019s impressive archive \u2013 which comprises hundreds of thousands of images, artifacts, periodicals, artwork, official records and memorabilia that help tell an extensive history of powerful ships, their passengers and their crews \u2013 is available for research by appointment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The fundraiser will also help SSHSA broaden its role as an educator and steward of maritime resources, supporting the organization\u2019s \u201cSteaming into the Future\u201d educational program. Funds will be used to continue support for www.shiphistory.org, an online interactive experience aimed at educating students worldwide. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
